- 1/2 kg lilish/Hilsa (Bengali cut)
- as required Big potato
- as required Few brinjal pieces cut into large

- 1 tsp ginger paste
- 1 tsp kalaunji

- 2 tsp maida+1/4th cup water (used as a thickning agent)

- Firstly heat a pan, add sufficient amount of oil in it for frying the fish pieces. Till the time the oil is heating let's come to the fish. Sprinkle some salt and turmeric powder over the pieces and coat them well from one side then cover the pieces and repeat the same process. Likewise coat the pieces well with turmeric powder and salt from both the sides.
- When the oil gets hot gently drop the pieces into the oil and fry it until its 80 percent done. Now keep them aside. Stir fry the brinjal pieces too. Now in the same oil fry the potato pieces too for about a minute and keep them aside too.
- Now in the same oil add a tsp of kalounji, let them crackle. Then add slit green chillies. Now in a small bowl add all dry masalas like little turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, salt and ginger paste, add some water in it and make a smooth paste. Now add this into the oil. Keep the flame low and fry the masala until oil starts leaving from the masalas.
- Now add 2 cups of warm water in it and mix it. When the water starts boiling, gently drop down the pieces of fish and potato pieces in it.
- Now add some salt as per your taste, mix it once then lower the flame, cover the pan and let it cook for about 10 mins. And in between open the lid and drop the brinjal pieces in it.
- Until its getting cooked, to make the curry little thick we will add 2 tsp of maida in 1/4th cup of water or you can even take the same curry from the kadai. Mix it well then add this mixture into the curry again. Give it a mix. Donot cover the pan again. Now let it cook for 5 mins more.
- Your iilish er tel jhol is now ready to serve. Serve it hot with steamed rice.
